... The stories about Bill Peyto's exploits, embellished or not, are sure to lure even the most indifferent bystander into the mystique that is Wild Bill. I first learned about Peyto's lost cabin from a poem published in a now defunct mountain culture magazine. The thought of a mysterious cabin, deep in the Banff backcountry, was too enticing a story to ignore. After months of research the day finally arrived when I would embark to find Peyto's Bookrest Cabin. Armed with some rough directions, we set off from Sunshine Village headed for Simpson Pass. Even with the cabin's approximate location circled on the map, the lost cabin proved to be elusive. As the sun was slipping behind the Rockies, we opted for one last search in the woods. Amongst the trees, hidden away just as Peyto had intended, we finally laid eyes on the ramshackle cabin. Hyper aware of the rapidly fading daylight, we made the most out of the short time we allotted ourselves to explore the cabin. My ambitious search for the colourful character that was Bill Peyto had ended. My venture was not out of disrespect, but of an inquisitiveness to learn more about the man and how he prospered in a very different time. Don’t worry Bill, your secret is safe with me...
